Report

The Ash Samba Boyz pulled off a remarkable comeback to
book their place in the quarter final of the Norfolk league
cup for third season running.

The Norfolk league side began the night 2-0 down from the 1st leg, a situation they have been in twice before - and they lost both those ties. With the visitors knowing an away goal would mean ASB must score at least 4, the message had to be attack with caution - a tricky combination.

The visitors set up to defend with 5 across the back, but they were under pressure almost immediately. A minute after Kieran Purser came close for the visitors, Tino Cassilo, the Samba Boyz skipper stepped up and curled a free-kick past Joe Kingman.

The visitors were on the back foot and were being forced back. Otto Ingelby came close to wiping out the aggregate deficit, but 5 minutes before the break the tie was level. Alex Reimermuller chased onto Gennaro Gattuso's clearance and lobbed over Kingman. A minute later and the tie was turned on its head as Cassilo converted a penalty given for shirt pulling in the area.

The tie was nearly finished on 67 minutes when substitute Didier Makanaki was denied by a superb save from Kingman from close range. A minute later youngster Otto Ingleby thought he'd bagged the 4th as he latched onto Fausto Albertini's long ball from the back and buried the chance past the despairing Kingman. However, the goal was disallowed for offside. Replays showed it to be the correct decision.

That warning proved a wakening call for Armoth's men as the visitors began creating chances as they seek ed to get back into the game. Darious Laidlow had to deny Ashley Butters from scoring an own goal before denying Rufus McCammon twice, first a header, the 2nd resulting from a poor back pass from Butters.

Laidlow was the hero again in the 86th minute when Purser raced through only to be denied by the keepers legs.

So the Samba Boyz claim back-to-back victories for the first time since February. Overall, it was probably a tie neither team deserved to lose, but Armoth's men can take great pride in their efforts as they nearly humbled the Norfolk league giants.
