Gunners visited Howard Lane Stadium with a good record against MJH
Athletic, having beaten them twice last season. However, Athletic were
better prepared for the Gunners on their visit today and threatened to
take revenge.
Bento Milhazes had the first chance for the visitors,
but his header was easily picked out of the air by Karlheinz Rahn.
Athletic's man of the match, Jerry van Engel scored the first of his
hat-trick with a fabulous header, when he dived in to connect with Isak
Normlund's cross. Two minutes later however, and the match was level when
Marty McCarroll drove a fierce low-level drive through a crowded defence
and past a stranded Rahn, who would have seen the ball very late indeed.
There were further chances at both ends, but half-time arrived with the
score level.
Ten minutes into the second half, Benny Coffey was
presented with a fabulous opportunity from his favourite freekick position
just to the left of centre of the goal. His trusty right foot whipped the
ball over the wall and into the top right corner of the goal, leaving Rahn
flat-footed. On the hour mark, Howard Acombley put the visitors further
ahead with another low power-blaster of a drive that again, Rahn failed to
get down in time for. Van Engel then stole the show with two goals in nine
minutes setting the game up for a draw. Ned Stride had other ideas, and in
the last action of the match, headed home Iustin Adam's
cross.
After the match, we caught up with the Gunners'
manager,
"Very tough match today. Our first win of the campaign and
it doubles our points tally in one go. They played superbly and may feel
that they have been hard done by. All I know is we hit the woodwork at
least three times, and Ned caught them napping at the
death."
